It's been a rough few days for our ratties. Late on Thursday evening, I went to check that the ratties had food and water. I noticed something wrong. The wire holder that held the water bottle in place-well, it wasn't moving. I realized it was attached to Toby and I yelled for Jess to come in.

We went all over the place looking for an emergency vet but NO ONE would see him. We ended up going to Jess' friend's house because she has a lot of experience dealing with rats. By the time we got there, Toby had managed to get the wire holder off himself but the leg was twisted up and the foot was swollen.

Jess took him to the vet that sees our cats the next day. They exclaimed over how cute and sweet he was and also the fact that no one would treat him (according to the vet, it's liks splinting a kitten and should be no big deal.) Toby got a splint on his leg that's almost as big as him. Jess also got instructions to bring him back once a week for 4 weeks as that's how long the splint has to remain on.

Because Toby has to keep the splint on (and also needs like 24/7 attention which we can't give him) we took him over to Jess' friend house yesterday as she has much more time to devote to him. Just in the short time between getting the splint on and us taking him over there he managed to make quite an art of chewing the splint. It absolutely cannot come off and there's no way we can constantly watch him to make sure it doesn't. We both feel a bit sad as Toby is so cute and sweet and snuggly but the is the best for him.

Meanwhile, I'm paying lots of attention to Wilson (his brother) Today, we had a bonding session where Wilson groomed my finger and was just snuggly and cute. I bet he misses his brother quiet fiercely but we want to make sure Toby heals properly.
